Voltaire warned us: the great is the enemy of the good. Nowhere does that warning ring truer than in exercise.
Most of us carry a mental image of what a “proper” workout plan looks like. It happens several days a week, mixes aerobic work with harder efforts, and is supported by a careful hydration strategy. That sounds great — until real life gets in the way. Work piles up. Family obligations take over. Travel disrupts everything. And suddenly the perfect plan becomes no plan at all.
I recently looked at what the evidence actually says about three exercise rules many of us treat as sacred. The verdict: you can break them, and you’ll probably be healthier for it.
The conventional wisdom is clear: spread your workouts across the week. Regular exercise builds habits and allows recovery. But what if weekdays are simply impossible?
A landmark 2024 study published in Circulation examined 60,000 participants in the UK Biobank. Participants wore accelerometers for a week and were classified as inactive, regularly active, or “weekend warriors” — people who concentrated their moderate-to-vigorous activity on just one or two days. After approximately five years of follow-up, the results were striking.
Both the regularly active and weekend warrior groups showed significantly lower risk for a wide range of diseases compared with inactive individuals. The benefits were especially notable for cardiovascular conditions — hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and sleep apnea all showed meaningful reductions in risk.
The practical message is not that weekend-only exercise is the optimal plan. It’s that getting the activity in — even if concentrated — appears far better than not getting it in at all.
One important caveat: this was an observational study using a single week of accelerometer data, so it can’t prove causality. And there’s a distinction worth making: disease risk and injury risk are not the same thing. Your heart and metabolism may respond well to a concentrated weekly dose of exercise. Your Achilles tendon and knees may be less forgiving if you go from zero all week to heroic efforts on Saturday. Easing into weekend activity — especially if you’ve been sedentary — is wise.
The takeaway: If weekdays are impossible, weekends still count. Don’t let the perfect weekly schedule become the enemy of the workout you can actually do.
For many people, “high-intensity interval training” conjures a specific image: a gym, a coach, a timer, and a heart-rate target. Three minutes hard, three minutes easy, repeated until exhaustion. That kind of session has real value — especially for competitive athletes. But for everyday health? Intensity may not need to look like that at all.
A 2026 study in the European Heart Journal followed approximately 60,000 UK Biobank participants and examined not just total physical activity, but the proportion that was vigorous. Outcomes included cardiovascular disease, diabetes, liver disease, inflammatory conditions, and dementia.
People with a higher proportion of vigorous activity had lower risk across nearly every outcome studied. The surprising finding: even having just 4% of your total activity classified as vigorous made a significant difference. That 4% might amount to only a few minutes per day, or roughly 20 minutes per week.
What does that look like in practice? It’s 45 seconds climbing a few flights of stairs with purpose. A brisk uphill walk on your lunch break. Carrying heavy grocery bags quickly from the car. Chasing your grandchild across the yard. None of these is a workout — but the key is that your breathing changes. You’re moving with intention. You feel it briefly, then life continues and you recover naturally.
As with the weekend warrior data, this was an observational study. The accelerometer captured only one week, and healthier people may simply be more capable of vigorous movement. Still, the signal is consistent and the biological rationale is sound.
The takeaway: You don’t need to schedule every burst of intensity. Look for the moments your day already offers — the stairs, the hill, the grocery run. As Voltaire might say: don’t let the perfect interval session prevent you from the short burst you can actually do today.
Walk into any sporting goods store and you’ll face a wall of water bottles, electrolyte packets, sports drinks, gels, pre-workout powders, and recovery beverages. The message is clear: you need a plan. But do you? For most workouts under an hour, the evidence suggests we may be solving a problem we don’t actually have.
The American College of Sports Medicine places the threshold for performance-affecting dehydration at around 2% of body weight. For a 160-pound person, that’s roughly 3 pounds of fluid — about 50 ounces. Most people doing a 30- to 60-minute workout in ordinary conditions simply don’t lose that much.
Want to know your own numbers? This is a perfect N-of-1 experiment: weigh yourself before and after a typical workout in similar, minimal clothing, before drinking afterward. If you lose half a pound or even a full pound, hydration probably wasn’t your limiting factor. If you’re consistently losing several pounds — especially in longer, hotter sessions — then it becomes relevant.
For most workouts under an hour: drink when you’re thirsty. Water is fine.
Electrolytes follow the same logic. They genuinely matter when you’ve been exercising for a long time in heat and humidity, or when you sweat heavily and repeatedly. For a typical 45-minute gym session, most people aren’t depleting their sodium stores. Most people also consume plenty of sodium in their daily diet. Save your money on the packets.
What about sports drinks like Gatorade? A systematic review of 50 placebo-controlled randomized trials found that carbohydrate-containing fluids clearly improved performance — but only for exercise lasting at least an hour. Under that threshold, water works just as well.
The takeaway: Gatorade may help during long endurance efforts. You almost certainly don’t need it for a 35-minute walk. For short workouts, the bottle is usually not the bottleneck.
Let’s return to Voltaire. The great can become the enemy of the good.

But the evidence gives us permission to be more flexible than we think. If weekdays are impossible, the weekend counts. The goal isn’t perfect exercise. The goal is exercise that happens often enough, sometimes hard enough, and in a way that fits your actual life.
